Lorenzo the Spooky Disco Skeleton

Around Halloween I was missing New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the world (it’s also one of the spookiest cities!). I wanted to do a project that celebrated Halloween but also celebrated some of the amazing cultural aspects of New Orleans. So I invited the voodoo spirits of the low country into my creative process and I conjured up Lorenzo The Groovy Spooky Skeleton. Don’t be scared, he’s here to party!

Lorenzo is constructed from magazine cutout collage (you may recognize many of the same shapes from my work on Bobby Hawk’s “Lights On Kinks Out” music video) and I rigged him up using the Duik Bassel plugin for After Effects. I experimented with different walk cycles and even gave him a little booty shake towards the end.

Future iterations would include additional artwork for other body / face perspectives to accommodate twisting + turning. Would also like to give him some friends and dance partners. It’s so rewarding to bring a character to life.
